Design Team Leader / Lead Engineer

Mayflower Engineering Ltd is a market leading, well established Sheffield based company. They specialise in the design and manufacture of a diverse range of medium to heavy Mechanical Engineering projects and products, working in a variety of market sectors to deliver exceptional engineering solutions.

We are currently looking to recruit a Design Team Leader / Lead Engineer in our Technical Department.

The successful candidate will report to the Technical & Commercial Manager and will be responsible for the line management of the design office team, whilst also co-ordinating all technical aspects of our turnkey projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious senior design engineer or lead engineer to demonstrate both their technical and team management skills to lead a small of skilled and dedicated engineers and, in time, to progress to Design Manager with additional management responsibilities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Line management of the design team
  • Together with Technical and Commercial Manager identify where additional resources are required to meet the demands of the business.
  • Allocation of engineering resource to projects in discussion with Engineering Project Manager and as per the project programme requirements.
  • Responsible for CAD/CAE systems.
  • Responsibility for technical project delivery, ensuring that all work complies with the requirements of the Machinery Directive/CE Marking, other applicable regulatory requirements, standards, codes of practice, internal procedures etc.
  • For each project, supervise the work of the design team and ensure that the technical objectives and specification is achieved within the allocated hours and equipment budgets.
  • Keep the Engineering Project Manger up to date with design progress and bring to their attention any technical issues, changes and variations.
  • Ensure that all necessary design reviews, risk assessments etc. are conducted and documented in line with project requirements.
  • Ensure that all necessary technical documentation is produced and is of a satisfactory standard, e.g. O&M manuals.
  • Provide technical support for the planning and execution of site activities.
  • Provide technical input and design hours for tenders for turnkey projects and produce tender documents as required.
  • Identify areas where the performance of the design function can be improved.

Essential Requirements:

  • Formal qualification in Mechanical Engineering, preferably to degree standard.
  • Experience of the design of machinery and equipment for the heavy/medium engineering sectors e.g. metals processing, mechanical handling, construction, oil and gas, subsea, lifting equipment.
  • Experience and reasonable level of competence with both 3D and 2D CAD software (SolidWorks / AutoCAD preferred but not essential).
  • Experience of working on multidisciplinary projects from project initiation through to installation and commissioning.
  • Experience of carrying out design verification using engineering calculations and FEA.
  • An understanding of equipment manufacture including fabrication, machining and assembly.
  • Ability to assess different engineering solutions and to determine the most cost effective approach to meeting customer requirements.
  • Ability to adapt existing engineering knowledge to new applications.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team of engineers to meet challenging programme and budgetary targets.
  • Committed to meeting customer requirements, whilst achieving the business objectives of the company.
  • Effective time management skills and able to work under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work effectively with other managers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Full UK driving license.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Chartered Engineer or working towards becoming chartered.
  • Knowledge and experience of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Knowledge and experience of automation/control systems.
  • Experience of working on site on installation and commissioning activities.
