Supporting Nuclear Decommissioning
A case study of Mayflower Engineering’s contribution to the Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) Encapsulation Plant at Winfrith, Dorset, delivered on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
Project Overview
As part of the UK’s nuclear decommissioning programme, new infrastructure was required at the Winfrith site to safely process and store intermediate level waste. The project formed part of a wider NDA strategy to manage and contain nuclear waste on site, encapsulating it in concrete within large storage containers.
The Challenge
Decommissioning nuclear facilities requires specialised equipment that meets the highest safety standards whilst enabling efficient waste processing. A trusted partner was needed to design and manufacture critical components for the Intermediate Level Waste Encapsulation Plant.
Safety
Ensuring robust radiation protection for personnel working with intermediate level waste
Compliance
Meeting stringent nuclear industry regulations and quality standards
Precision
Delivering equipment that would function reliably in a high-stakes environment
Scope of Work
Mayflower Engineering was engaged to provide three critical components for the Intermediate Level Waste Encapsulation Plant, covering detailed design, manufacture, testing, and delivery to site.

Shield Wall
A robust steel structure designed to protect personnel from radiation during waste processing operations

Power Recovery Platform
A large access platform providing safe and strategic access around the encapsulation plant

Waste Chute
Enabling efficient disposal of removed materials into a designated collection bin
Design Responsibility
NSG Environmental provided conceptual designs, which Mayflower developed into full detailed designs, assuming full responsibility for safety and compliance. This process required:
- Detailed structural analysis to ensure radiation containment
- Compliance with nuclear industry standards
- Consideration of operational requirements
- Integration with existing site infrastructure
- Verification of all safety features
Scope of Work
The structures were fabricated at Mayflower’s facilities, fully assembled and tested to ensure performance, then dismantled and prepared for delivery.

Fabrication
Precision manufacturing of all components to exact specifications

Assembly
Complete assembly in factory to verify fit and function

Testing
Rigorous testing to ensure all safety and operational requirements were met

Delivery
Careful disassembly, packaging and transport to the Winfrith site

Successful Outcomes
The completed equipment was successfully delivered to Winfrith, contributing to the safe encapsulation and storage of intermediate level waste. Mayflower’s expertise ensured the project met the required standards for nuclear safety and durability.
By combining engineering capability with responsive project management, Mayflower supported Magnox and the NDA in their critical mission to decommission nuclear facilities safely and responsibly.
Safety Standards Met
All equipment complied with stringent nuclear industry requirements
On-Specification Delivery
Equipment performed exactly as required for waste encapsulation
Flexible Service
Accommodated site delays with free storage until installation was possible
The Bigger Picture
This project represents an important contribution to the UK’s nuclear decommissioning programme, helping to safely manage radioactive waste for generations to come.
Environmental Protection
Safely containing nuclear waste to prevent environmental contamination
Long-term Safety
Contributing to the secure management of radioactive materials
Industry Collaboration
Demonstrating effective partnership between specialist contractors
